Mauritian Internet, level of integration (part 1)

I can remember the first day that I went on the Internet. It was in the late 90’s. At this time I didn’t even had a personal computer at home. I remember this old fashioned all in one shop that gives all sorts of services. I primarily used this shop to buy stationery and magazines. It was the only shop in Beau Bassin, at this time, giving printing services.

Some times after Internet was officially launched in Mauritius, this shop started to add this service to its long list of services. The first thing that I was searching for was Tomb Raider cheats codes. At this time, yahoo was the leader, maybe even the only one, in the search engines. It was still a Meta one (It was born Meta).

I have read in computers’ magazines about the internet and services it was offering, seen some emission on television about it, although at that time it was limited. At this time I was not aware about how this project could evolve; neither have the other Mauritians.

The amount of website was very low, as compared to what we have now. The number of Mauritian site was sure to be nil, and such was Mauritian online services. During this era, the internet was only to inform people. But yet there were little people in Mauritius that was informed.
